Report on Oban - Tobermory Cycle
22 August 2013
Thursday
Stayed in Oban overnight to get ready for our cycle weekend. The weather was glorious as we sat outside a bar watching the cruise ship in the bay. Visited Alex and Joyce (originally from Kilbirnie) who let us store our bikes in their garage overnight.
Friday
We headed north along the coast to Ganavan then over to Dunbeg. Some of us stopped off at the airport at Connell to watch a vintage plane taking off and look at the old cars that were being exhibited. We carried on east along the road to Connell and over the bridge. We continued north along the coast staying mostly on cycle tracks. We stopped for lunch at South Creagan and this is when the rain came on for a wee while. After lunch we headed along the dismantled railway at the Strath of Appin passing Castle Stalker. Eventually we crossed the Ballachulish bridge but this part of the way was a bit dodgy as the A82 to Fort William is a very busy road so we decided to err on the side of caution and cycle along a narrow pavement past Onich and eventually to the bunkhouse at Corrour.
Saturday
We crossed on the Corran ferry to Ardgour for breakfast. This was a tiring day tackling many hills till we eventually reached Lochaline for the Calmac ferry to Fishnish on Mull. Leisurely cycle to Salen then it was that never ending hill to Tobermory. It went on and on and up and up till we lost the will to live! The only bonus was the steep downhill into Tobermory!! That night we had a great shindig in the Mishnish.
Sunday
Now it was up that steep hill again out of Tobermory and headed along the coast road to Craignure to catch the ferry to Oban. Some of us visited McCaig?s Tower once back in Oban just because it was there!
Overall we had yet another great cycling weekend.
