Report on Arran Weekend

Arran Weekend 12th - 14th Oct 07

Seemed as though it would be a busy weekend in Arran as it was difficult getting the car booked onto the ferry due to the start of the school holidays. Alison and I were lucky to get the last booking for the 3:15pm and the Gaffney's had to be the advance party on the 12:30pm ferry.
As usual Alison and I got all the shopping done and went out for lunch before heading off to Arran for the weekend. We met Jacqui, Craig, Dorothy and Phil onboard then headed off to the cottage where Alan, Kathryn and Niamh were waiting then we all mucked in to get everything prepared for the late arrivals. By the time Peter, Helen, Ewan, Malcolm, Bryon, Aileen and Mark arrived we were as usual quite merry after a few glasses of wine! The main course was steak pie, mashed potatoes (courtesy of Aunt Bessie), peas and carrots. For sweets we had the usual selection of cheesecake, trifle and of course not forgetting Helen's meringues with fresh cream and strawberries. What a feast!

On Saturday we divided into 2 parties. Some went up Cioch na h-Oighe and North Goatfell whilst the others headed along the coastal route to Laggan then up and over between Creag Ghlas Laggan and Tor Meadhonach and down into Lochranza. Now can you imagine the scene.....everyone desperate for the usual beer after out on the hills only to discover that the Lochranza Hotel was shut for holidays!!!!! I phoned Mark who was with the others as they were now heading down the Corrie path towards the Corrie Hotel with the same intention as us. We had planned to jump on the bus as meet them in Corrie but disaster no. 2 ...........the Corrie Hotel was also closed!!!! After a few close temper tantrums we all headed back to cottage for a cuppa!!! Now while on the bus, still in shock at not getting a drink, Alan devised a new business for the island which he thought about pitching to Dragon's Den. He thought that he could buy a bus and convert it into a travelling pub....a bit like dial a bus instead it would be dial a pub! If you knew Alan you would realise how far fetched his ideas become. We still couldn't believe that 2 hotels would actually close down when the island was busy, thank goodness we weren't depending on them for meals all weekend.

On the Sunday we had another enjoyable day abseiling from the rocks at Sannox. Peter, Ewan and Malcolm took charge as usual and filled everyone with confidence except Dorothy who had a bit of a wobble. I am sure she'll be OK next time as she has something to prove to Phil who was on cloud nine.

Yes again another good weekend and looking forward to the next.
